About · Est. 2017, Niagara-on-the-Lake

A media brand built entirely around navigating the Niagara region — written by the people who live here.

From the waterfalls to the Welland canal lookout to the backroad of a Beamsville vineyard, every guide, every mapped point, every itinerary is researched on the ground by local editors.

— A working notebook from Queen Street, Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Our Origin

Started in a back office on Queen Street in 2017. Still here.

A short, plain account of who we are, why we started, and why every name on our masthead lives within an hour of the Falls.

Niagara on the Map was founded in 2017 above a bakery on Queen Street in Niagara-on-the-Lake by a small group of local journalists, cartographers, and wine-country writers who were tired of generic "Top 10 Things to Do in Niagara" lists written from three hundred miles away. They had watched their own neighbourhoods — the canal-side trails of Welland, the fruit stands of Jordan, the lesser-known overlooks in Fort Erie — get flattened into the same handful of attractions on every national travel site.

The premise was simple. If you mapped the region point by point, story by story, and you let only people who actually lived in those twelve municipalities write the captions, you'd end up with something more useful than another round-up.

Seven years later, that premise has become 1,200+ published guides and 4,800+ mapped points of interest across all twelve Niagara municipalities. Our masthead is now nine full-time editorial staff and fourteen contributing writers, every one of them based within the region. We are not a remote content farm with Niagara in the name. We are a regional publisher — the only one built end-to-end around navigating this specific 1,854 square kilometres.

"Write about the places you walk on Sunday. That was the whole editorial brief."

The writing philosophy hasn't changed. Our on-the-ground editor still physically checks seasonal venue closures, trail washouts, and vineyard tasting-room hours before they go into a guide. The map is updated continuously. The newsletter — The Current — now reaches 87,000+ subscribers every Friday morning with what to do, what just opened, and what to skip this weekend.

The Masthead & What Makes Us Different

Local editors. A real map. Daily on-the-ground updates.

Four reasons our coverage of the Niagara region reads differently from a national travel site — and the people behind it.

Updated daily, on the ground

A working editor who physically checks the trails, the closures, and the seasonal hours.

Trail washouts, vineyard tasting-room rotations, shucked-shucked shucked oyster re-openings — our updates don't come from a CMS feed. They come from someone who drove there that week.

A Manifesto

"A region this small, this layered, this close to two Great Lakes — it deserves more than a single landmark on a national round-up. It deserves its own map, its own editors, and its own stories told by the people who walk the trails on Sunday morning."
